Exploring The Dark Peak

The Explorers and older Scouts traveled to the Hope Valley in the Peak District at the weekend to complete expeditions and to explore the local area.

Our accommodation for the weekend was Pindale Farm Activity Center. The Scouts and Explorers camped in lightweight tents and the Leadership team enjoyed the luxury of a bunk house.

We walked all day Saturday covering around 10 miles, travelling from Hope village to Calver village, following the river Derwent. The day began with heavy rain but soon the clouds lifted and a warm wind accompanied us until the rain began again at dusk.

During the walk we visited Hathersage and Grindleford - testing the local coffee shops en route! We had a few near misses with slips and trips along the riverside and actually lost two of the Leadership team down an embankment. I am please to say, however, that the only injury was a cut finger.

The Explorers navigated their own route with a little help for those who were new to the Unit. The Scouts also navigated but also had much instruction along the way.

It was a most enjoyable days walking and even though the weather was not the best, the views were still worth the trip out. The evening for the Leaders ended with an extremely nice, though rather hot, Chilli with all the trimmings, cooked by Nick. (Thanks Nick)

Rain stopped play on Sunday and the group decided to explore Castleton village. This included a visit to the local Museum, a wet walk through the old village to the mouth of "The Devils Arse" caves and of course a visit tot the tea rooms.

Many other groups completing awards during the weekend had their activities cut short as localized flooding and high winds hit the valley. However, everyone involved in the trip persevered through whatever the weather threw at us and we all had a really enjoyable weekend.
